Bali is hard on skin. Between the UV, the humidity, salt water, sunscreen you reapply all day and air conditioning at night, most visitors arrive with a complexion that is simultaneously congested and dehydrated — oily in the T-zone, tight everywhere else, and doing neither job well.
A facial is one of the most effective things you can do about that. But it is also the treatment people book most carelessly, usually straight off the beach at 4pm. Here is what actually happens in one, and how to time it so you get the benefit instead of the irritation.
What a facial involves, step by step
1. Consultation. This is the part people skip past, and it is the part that decides everything else. Our therapists ask about your skin type, what you are currently using at home, how much sun you have had, and any sensitivities or reactions. A facial built for oily skin will make dry, windburnt skin worse. There is no single "best" facial — only the right one for the skin in front of us.
2. Cleanse. Removing sunscreen, salt, sweat and the day's buildup. Sunscreen in particular does not come off with a splash of water, and residue is a common cause of congestion in Bali.
3. Exfoliation. Lifting dead surface cells so the skin underneath is exposed and products can actually penetrate. This is what makes the difference in texture and tone visible.
4. Massage. The most underestimated step. The massage component increases blood flow, which delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the skin and gives the complexion that rested look. It is also why people fall asleep.
5. Mask and treatment. Chosen for your skin type — hydrating, balancing, calming, or clarifying.
6. Moisturise and protect. Finished with hydration and sun protection.
We use Bioskos products, and the whole treatment is tailored to the skin we have actually assessed rather than to a fixed script.
Timing is the part that matters most
This is where most people get it wrong, and it is worth more than any product choice.
Do not book straight after a long day in the sun. Skin that is hot and mildly burnt is inflamed. Exfoliating and massaging inflamed skin does not calm it down. It stings, and it can leave you redder than you arrived. If you have overdone it, book a Sunburn Massage instead — it is designed for skin that has taken too much — and come back for the facial once the heat has left your face.
Do not go straight back into strong sun afterwards. A facial exfoliates. That removes some of your skin's own defence and can make it more reactive for the next day or so. If your plan is facial at 11am then beach until sunset, move the facial.
The best slots are late afternoon or evening, after you have finished with the sun, showered, and are not going anywhere. You leave with clean, hydrated, calm skin, sleep on it, and get the benefit the next morning. A proper rest day also works well, ideally with the facial early and no sun exposure after.
Give it a couple of days before a big event or a photoshoot, not hours. Skin can look slightly flushed immediately after exfoliation. The glow people book facials for shows up the following day.
What a facial will and will not do
Honest expectations matter more than promises.
It will improve texture and tone, fade the look of dull patches, boost circulation, and leave skin better hydrated and better able to absorb whatever you use at home. Most people see the difference the next morning.
It will not treat acne as a medical condition, remove deep scarring or pigmentation, or replace dermatology. If something on your skin is painful, bleeding, changing, or not responding to treatment, see a doctor — that is not a spa problem, and we will tell you so.
How often
Roughly every four weeks is the usual rhythm, which matches how quickly skin renews itself. On a two-week holiday, one facial a week is plenty. More frequent than that is not better — the exfoliation needs to be spaced out, especially with this much sun around.
Booking
We are on Jl. Raya Uluwatu Pecatu No.999, open every day from 11.00 am to 08.00 pm. Facial slots in the early evening go first, so it is worth booking a day ahead in high season.
Tell us before we start if you are using retinol or acids at home, if you have had recent treatments or sunburn, or if you are pregnant — each of those changes what we should and should not do.
See the facial treatment page for details, or the full service list to compare options. Message us on WhatsApp to book.
